In the current phase of port activity development, which is experiencing continuous and steady growth, over 4 million tons of various goods are handled, including kaolin, coal, cellulose, cereals, timber, equipment, bulk minerals, steel products, and automobiles.
The port, specialized in general cargo and dry bulk cargo, has extensive and specific experience in certain types of goods. The development programs of the port include the construction of a modern area dedicated to Ro-Ro coastal services and multipurpose yards.
According to Regional Law 12/2012, the Region exercises planning, programming, and infrastructure functions in coordination with the Port System Authority, and continues to manage concessions outside the port perimeter.
In Monfalcone, the seat of the Maritime Authority, the Special Company for the Port of Monfalcone operates for promotion, and the Consortium for Economic Development of Monfalcone operates solely for infrastructure. These two entities are also responsible for maintenance, infrastructure interventions, and general interest services delegated and funded by the Region and the port management entity.
Presidential Decree dated March 29, 2018, No. 57, which entered into force on June 14, 2018, initiated the process aimed at a synergistic cooperation between the nationally significant port of Monfalcone and the internationally significant port of Trieste, thus including the Port of Monfalcone in the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority.
This process was characterized by inter-institutional dialogue between the Region and the Port System Authority, resulting in the signing of an inter-institutional agreement on port management on December 20, 2019, with effect from January 1, 2020, followed by supplementary acts for the complete definition of port governance.
In December 2019, the first adoption of the localized variant to the current port master plan (dating back to 1979) was carried out by the Region, in conjunction with the Port System Authority, the Municipality of Monfalcone, and other relevant entities.
